  • The Document Exchange is established

  • British Telecommunication Act reduces the historic Royal Mail letter monopoly.

    1996
  • The acquisition of ICS forms DX's parcels business

  • 2000
  • The Postal Services Act replaces the letter monopoly with a licenced area and creates Postcomm, the industry regulator to introduce competition.


  • 2001
  • Postcomm issues DX with the first interim license to compete in 'niche' areas.


  • 2002
  • Postcomm sets out the timetable for controlled and phased deregulation.
  • Postcomm issues DX with the first long-term licence permitting tracked business to business mail and a range of other services


  • 2003
  • 30% of the postal market is opened to competition
  • Extension of DX's mail services to selected postcodes nationwide


  • 2004
  • DX wins the Queens Award for Innovation
  • Competitive market review by Postcomm reveals only 1% of the licenced area is actually being contest


  • 2005
  • Postcomm decides to bring forward full market opening to January 2006
  • High Street retailing of DX services begins through MailBoxes etc.


  • 2006
  • On 1 January Postcomm opens the UK postal market to full competition
  • On 23 August DX and SMS Join Forces
